What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a gentle, but powerful tool for healing and transformation. There are many forms of hypnosis, but in Spiritual Psychology, hypnosis means that we do some simple relaxation techniques like breathing and mindfulness and really bring awareness into the body. The human body is like a gateway to consciousness and when the thinking mind relaxes a little one can become aware of the feelings, beliefs and experiences that drive outdated habits for defending the self. When we can’t think our way out of a problem or pattern, it is likely generated on an unconscious level. This is why hypnosis is so helpful, because it allows us to work directly with the unconscious and make it conscious, to bring the mind, the body and the spirit into alignment.
When the mind relaxes and the body relaxes one also becomes more aware of the subtle or spiritual aspects of the self and the world. We call this the transpersonal realm, as it goes beyond the small self to connect with the larger truth that we are connected with all of life. This connection transcends our limited human resources and allows access to power, insight, wisdom and guidance unavailable to the regular thinking mind – this is healing on a soul level. We use these transpersonal connections to inform and guide much of the inner work of Spiritual Psychology.
In Spiritual Psychology hypnosis is used to bring the unconscious into the conscious mind. Clients always have complete control over the process and remember everything that happens in a session. The hypnotherapy I practice always adds to your awareness of yourself.
Though suggestion hypnosis is a very powerful modality for modifying behavior, I use suggestion hypnosis only in a limited way. Suggestion hypnosis is where the hypnotist makes suggestions to the client while they are deeply relaxed, usually to stop or change a particular habit like stopping smoking or having a better golf swing. Spiritual Psychology uses the tools of Depth Hypnosis; active imagination, active recall and connection to the transpersonal or authentic self to repattern the roots of the presenting issue so that the healing has profound and lasting benefits. Depth Hypnosis was developed by Dr. Isa Gucciardi. More information about Depth Hypnosis can be found on the Foundation of the Sacred Stream website at www.sacredstream.org. If you are looking for straight suggestion hypnosis, there many great practitioners in the Bay Area who can help.
